Deadline calculator: Austria

Work out the day a deadline ends under the rules the authorities count by, and how many working days lie between two dates. Country — Austria: its public holidays are taken into account.

We count the way authorities count deadlines: administrative, tax and court ones. The day of the event is not counted, and a last day that falls on a weekend or a public holiday moves to the next working day. A deadline in a contract may be counted differently — switch the shift off for that.

How a deadline is counted

Three rules, the same in all four countries. The day of the event is not counted: eight days from 1 March end on 9 March. A deadline in weeks or months ends on the day with the same name or number, and where the month has no such day, on its last day: one month from 31 January ends on 28 February. If the last day falls on a Saturday, a Sunday or a public holiday, the deadline ends on the next working day.

Austria: §§ 32–33 of the administrative procedure act (AVG). Good Friday is not a public holiday, but a deadline cannot end on it (§ 33 Abs 2 AVG). For tax deadlines 24 December counts the same way (§ 108 Abs 3 BAO) — this calculator does not move that date, so in that case the answer may be a day earlier than the legal one.
