How to obtain temporary protection under Section 24 in Germany

What to do, step by step

1. 1If you entered visa-free, count 90 days from first entry. To stay longer, apply for a Section 24 residence permit within that period.
2. 2If you need accommodation, care or social benefits, contact a reception center where you are staying. Registration is required for state support.
3. 3After registration, apply to the foreigners authority for your place of residence. In many municipalities the process can be started online.
4. 4Keep the submission confirmation and follow requests from the local authority for additional documents or an in-person appointment.
5. 5If your Section 24 permit was valid on 1 February 2026 and you are in the covered group, it is automatically extended until 4 March 2027; no separate application or new card is needed.
