How to move from temporary protection to another residence permit in Spain

What to prepare

  • A valid passport or other identity document, plus your TIE and/or temporary protection decision.
  • Documents required for the chosen permit, such as an employment contract, study enrolment, proof of family relationship, income or residence, depending on the route.
  • After approval, proof that you renounced temporary protection and the documents required for the new TIE.

What to do, step by step

  1. 1Choose the specific route for the new permit and check its current requirements in the Ministry’s official information sheet. Instruction SEM 2/2026 does not replace the conditions for each permit type.
  2. 2Apply for the new permit while your temporary protection is still valid. Attach the documents for the chosen route and keep the filing receipt.
  3. 3Wait for a favourable decision. Do not renounce temporary protection merely because you filed the application; renunciation is required after the new permit is approved.
  4. 4After approval, submit the renunciation of temporary protection to the competent authority and keep the receipt. Then complete the formalities for the new TIE.
  5. 5If you later plan to apply for national long-term residence, keep all decisions and cards: under the Instruction, time under temporary protection counts in full toward the five-year period if the other requirements are met.
