From 1 October, Slovakia will tighten checks on compulsory motor liability insurance

Act No. 77/2026 changes how PZP, the compulsory third-party liability insurance for vehicle holders, is checked. From 1 August, the Ministry of Interior has been notifying holders whose cars have not had valid PZP for more than 24 months. The notice sets out ways to remedy the situation and the date of permanent removal from the register: 1 October 2026. A car removed this way may not be used in road traffic.

After that, a new system will operate: the insurer will send information to the Slovak Insurers’ Bureau and then to the central vehicle register. If no PZP record is present for more than 30 days, the system notifies the district office for the holder’s place of residence or the company’s registered address. The fine is €120, €300, €600 or €900 depending on vehicle weight; if the breach is repeated after 150 days, the amount doubles. The validity of PZP can be checked by vehicle registration number on the Slovak Insurers’ Bureau website.
