How to give up temporary protection in Slovakia

A person may voluntarily give up temporary protection in Slovakia, for example before moving to another country or after obtaining another type of residence. Under Slovak law, the status ends on the day the Ministry of Interior receives the written declaration of renunciation.

The “Žiadosť o zrušenie dočasného útočiska” form must be downloaded, completed in Latin script and signed by hand. To submit it by email, scan the form together with the temporary protection document and send both to po.mu@minv.sk. The document scan must be in colour.

The other option is to send the signed original form and a copy of the document by registered post to: Migračný úrad MV SR, Procedurálny odbor, Pivonková 6, 812 72 Bratislava. Keep a photo or copy of the documents before sending them.

If a plastic temporary protection card was issued, it must be returned to the police without delay after the status ends. The card may be sent by registered post to the Foreign Police department that issued it or handed in there personally.

The Migration Office does not issue a separate decision or certificate confirming that the status has ended. Validity can be checked on the Ministry of Interior portal using the identifier and birth number shown on the document. The technical update may take around 2 weeks or longer, although legally the status ends on the day the declaration is received.

After renouncing protection, institutions providing benefits or services should be notified separately, and rental, insurance, banking and telecommunications contracts should be settled. Ending temporary protection does not close these obligations automatically.
