Romania has registered 223,808 temporary protection beneficiaries

Romania’s General Inspectorate for Immigration reported that 223,808 temporary protection beneficiaries had been registered from the start of the full-scale war through 31 August 2026. Residence permits were issued or reissued to them under the applicable rules.

Of the total, 220,881 people were Ukrainian citizens, representing 98.7% of all registered beneficiaries. These figures show cumulative registrations since the war began and do not necessarily equal the number of people present in the country at the same time.

Romania recorded 935 asylum applications in the first eight months of 2026. Ukrainian citizens submitted 466 of them, almost half of the total.
