Portugal confirms 282 mpox cases, but numbers have fallen in recent weeks

Portugal’s Directorate-General for Health said 282 mpox cases were confirmed from 1 January to 31 August 2026. Infections were most frequent from late May through June and July, but case numbers declined during the latest two weeks. Lisbon and the Tagus Valley accounted for 66.7% of cases, while 18 people required hospital admission.

People with skin or mucosal lesions, fever or swollen lymph nodes are advised to avoid close contact and call SNS 24 on 808 24 24 24 or contact a health professional. Authorities continue monitoring, prevention campaigns and vaccination for higher-risk groups.
