The Netherlands changes its regional safety assessment for Ukrainian asylum claims

The Dutch government has introduced a new regional safety assessment for the individual examination of asylum applications from Ukraine. According to the government, it affects about 1,010 pending applications outside the Temporary Protection Directive.

For applicants from regions considered less dangerous, the immigration service may assess whether another part of Ukraine is a realistic and accessible internal protection alternative. Refusal is not automatic: each claim must be examined individually for a risk of persecution or serious harm.

The change does not affect the right of Ukrainians covered by temporary protection to use that status. It concerns the separate asylum procedure, so applicants should check which procedure their case follows and seek legal advice if needed.
