Temporary protection in Belgium extended until 4 March 2028

EU Member States agreed to extend temporary protection for people displaced from Ukraine by Russia’s war until 4 March 2028. The scheme continues to provide residence, work, education, healthcare and social assistance without the ordinary asylum procedure.

An additional condition applies to future applicants. EMN Belgium says that from 4 March 2027 a new applicant must prove compliance with military obligations under Ukrainian law or an exemption. Examples include a passport with an official exit stamp or exemption documentation.

The condition does not affect people already benefiting from temporary protection in the EU. The Council adopted Decision 2026/1912 on 30 July 2026 and it was published in the EU Official Journal on 4 August.
