28% of Austria's population has a migrant background

An average of around 2.55 million people with a migrant background lived in Austria during 2025. That was 28% of the country's population. The statistics include people who were born abroad themselves or whose two parents were born outside Austria.

In 2010, the figure was 1.52 million, meaning the number increased by about one million over 15 years. Statistics Austria says the country's population has grown only through immigration in recent years, because deaths have exceeded births every year since 2020.

On 1 January 2026, Austria had 1,881,300 foreign citizens. The largest groups were citizens of Germany, at 242,300; Romania, 157,700; Türkiye, 123,400; and Serbia, 122,500. Citizens of Hungary, Syria, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine and Poland completed the top ten, with Ukrainians in ninth place.
