According to ÚPSVaR data and findings from recruitment agency Transfer Slovensko, nearly 150,000 foreigners worked in Slovakia in August 2026, over 15,000 more than a year earlier. Ukrainian citizens formed the largest group, followed by India, the Philippines, Nepal, Vietnam and Uzbekistan. The highest figures were recorded in Bratislava districts and in Trnava, Nitra, Senec, Malacky and Žilina.

Foreign workers mainly fill long-vacant manufacturing and logistics positions where unemployment is low. Agency commercial manager Tomáš Kušmirek explained that recruitment, paperwork, transport, accommodation and integration require considerable effort, but without them companies struggle to sustain production, services and growth. Skills, mobility and willingness to work in a particular location do not always allow workers to be recruited from another region.

He said foreign recruitment complements rather than replaces efforts to engage locally unemployed people and should not lower standards. It is used for persistent vacancies, high turnover or local shortages; standard employment involves taxes and health and social contributions.

Kušmirek also considers retention crucial: working conditions, housing, communication and adaptation. Experience and documents make workers more attractive to other employers and markets, so adaptation support helps preserve investment in recruitment and training.
