# How to obtain temporary protection under Section 24 in Germany

This guide explains when a Ukrainian needs to register and apply for a residence permit under Section 24 of the Residence Act. It also covers the automatic extension of eligible permits until 4 March 2027.

## Who this guide is for

For Ukrainian citizens who have recently arrived in Germany, plan to stay longer than 90 days or already hold a Section 24 permit.

## What to prepare

- A valid biometric passport or all available identity documents.
- Proof of registration in Germany, if already issued.
- Your existing Section 24 permit or another residence document if you already hold status.
- The application or online submission confirmation for the local foreigners authority; check your city or district website for the exact attachments.

## What to do, step by step

1. If you entered visa-free, count 90 days from first entry. To stay longer, apply for a Section 24 residence permit within that period.
2. If you need accommodation, care or social benefits, contact a reception center where you are staying. Registration is required for state support.
3. After registration, apply to the foreigners authority for your place of residence. In many municipalities the process can be started online.
4. Keep the submission confirmation and follow requests from the local authority for additional documents or an in-person appointment.
5. If your Section 24 permit was valid on 1 February 2026 and you are in the covered group, it is automatically extended until 4 March 2027; no separate application or new card is needed.

## Fees and deadlines

Apply for Section 24 within the first 90 days after initial entry if you plan to stay longer. Automatic extension of covered permits requires no separate application; check any local fees with the foreigners authority.
